Abortion was still illegal in Chile until 2017. It is legal to interrupt a pregnancy when the life or health of a woman is at risk or if the pregnancy was the result of rape or when the foetus will not survive the pregnancy.
The Parlament will examine in January 2021 a bill to legalise abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.
